Workshop information
Our Academics Workshops are designed to engage a school class in hands-on activities
covering popular academic science and technology curriculum objectives. Most programs
are 2 hours in length and can accommodate up to 32 students. Our highly skilled staff
can deliver their programs at your school or in a Children's Technology Workshop facility.

Simple MachinesStrand: Structures and Mechanisms Topic: Movement Students will investigate simple machines and movement through hands-on projects. Using a variety of tools and take-home resources, students will construct their own interactive and mechanical storybook. This course is subject to an additional materials fee. |

StabilityStrand: Structures and Mechanisms Topic: Stability This workshop invites students to learn about different types of structures and what makes them stable. Through hands-on activities and challenges, students will build their own structures and investigate the forces that act on them. |

Pulleys & GearsStrand: Structures and Mechanisms Topic: Pulleys & Gears With a focus on levers and gear ratios, students use engineering and science concepts in this exploration of motion and machines. Students understand how rotational motion is converted to translational motion with hands–on investigations that examine both simple and compound machines. |

StructuresStrand: Structures and Mechanisms Topic: Forces Acting on Structures and Mechanisms During this bridge-building workshop, students learn and apply knowledge of tension, compression, torsion and shear. Students use teamwork and problem solving skills to construct and draw conclusions about structures by exploring materials, forces and construction techniques. |

MotionStrand: Structures and Mechanisms Topic: Motion Students will learn about different types of motion as they construct and investigate several different mechanisms. The conversion of rotational movement to translational movement as well as the function of various mechanical assemblies including cranks will be addressed through hands-on explorations. This course is subject to an additional materials fee. |

PneumaticsStrand: Structures and Mechanisms Topic: Mechanical Efficiency - Pneumatics The pneumatics workshop introduces students to pump, valve and piston systems. Students construct and test a pneumatic device while investigating concepts in fluids and fluid flow. Students will be introduced to schematic diagrams and the terminology relevant to pneumatic systems. |

AnimationStrand: Language Topic: Oral & Visual Communication The animation workshop introduces students to stop motion animation production. Animations are created using digital cameras and capture software and students learn about all aspects of the production process as they work in teams to write, direct and produce their own short film. |
